Management and Governance

Ashcott Village Hall is a registered charity (No. 900075) and is managed by a volunteer-led Management Committee. The committee is responsible for the day-to-day operations, maintenance, bookings, and long-term planning of the hall. It operates under the ownership of Ashcott Parish Council and is supported by a network of local volunteers.

The hall is funded through:

  • Hire fees
  • Community fundraising events
  • Occasional grants and donations

Debbie Shingle – Chair person

Hi, my name is Debbie and I have lived in the village since 2013. I joined the committee as the Booking Secretary but 3 years ago I became the committee’s chairman.  I thoroughly enjoy working with the other committee members on projects and fundraising to keep this vital village asset used to its full capacity. We are also now trying to involve the younger generation with the committee so the Hall can prosper in the future. I strongly believe in helping wherever I can, although this is sometimes very difficult due to a few health conditions that I suffer from and looking after my husband and my family.

Martin Timms – Secretary

I moved to Ashcott five years ago.  It had been nearly fifty years since I last lived in a village.  After living here for a year I was persuaded to take on the role of secretary at the Village Hall.  My role is to create the agendas and minutes for the committee, and to write letters for them.  It’s been fascinating learning how the Village Hall operates.  It’s a central part of the village and is a real focus point for people who live here.  It’s been really rewarding to be part of the team that organises events and raises funds to keep the Hall running.  Being part of this has meant I have met a lot of people and made many new friends.  I would suggest to anyone new to the village to get involved and to experience the benefits I have.

Steve Pickford – Treasurer

Mel French – Bookings secretary

Jason Phillips – Buildings Manager

Hello, I’m Jason the building manager and committee member I’ve been i the area for the last 10 years and on the committee for 3. After overcoming some personal struggles,  I found a second family within the committee and the village at large. I am a strong believer that events we hold at the hall are key to help with building such a wonderful community we have here in Ashcott.

Sarah Hughes

Hi, I have been part of this village all my life. I have been on the committee for the last 4 or 5 years and brought up by parents heavily involved with many of the village committees including the one instrumental to building this current village hall built in 1987. I have fond memories of all the hard work being put into the fundraising and building of it and also, of the people of the village who came together to support however they could. It is a great space for all the community.

Gus Wans – Parish Council Representative

I have lived in the village for over 35 years. During this time my wife, Ruth, and I have been involved with a number of village activities and clubs and most of these had connections to the village hall. More recently, in older age, I have exchanged the more active side of village life for membership of the Parish Council and I now act as the Parish Council representative on the village hall committee. Our wonderful village hall is a central and well used part of Ashcott and I enjoy my continuing connection to it.

Sam Hughes – Ashcott Table Tennis Representative

Hi, I’m Sam and I’ve lived in the village my whole life. I’m the Ashcott Table Tennis Club representative for the Village Hall Committee. This role involves managing the club and coaching children and adults to develop and learn new skills. While I represent the table tennis club I also take on other responsibilities managing the Village Hall. These include running monthly film nights and getting involved in the technical side of our very successful annual pantomime.

John Herbert – Ashcott church representative

I moved to Ashcott from Glastonbury in 1998 with three of my children, my wife Kitty and her father, as we needed a large house to be together, and wanted to live in a village. We soon became involved in the community through the church, the village hall and the Ring O Bells and have come to know and love many of the people here. I joined the Village Hall Committee quite a few years ago as a church representative when the previous person wanted to come out. I like being on the committee as I have come to know so many lovely people, to get involved in the hall’s activities, and I have been able to liaise between church and hall.
